On September 10, St. Mary’s patriots celebrated our National Anthem Day! The Knights of Columbus presented the color guard as we took part in leaning about our country and our flag. Our 2nd and 3rd grade patriots sang one of our favorite patriotic songs – Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Our fourth grade patriots were excited to be part of our National Anthem celebration too. They performed in a skit about the Battle of Baltimore, which occurred during the War of 1812. Francis Scott Key, a young attorney at the time, witnessed first-hand America’s victory in this battle. He was so inspired by the events that he wrote our National Anthem. To prepare for the play, our fourth grade patriots studied the War of 1G812, and the battle in particular. For our 4th grade patriots this skit is just the beginning. Part of their Social Studies curriculum for the year focuses on Maryland’s history, government and economy. It took many hours of practice and studying, but our patriots are on their way to becoming experts on Maryland!
Our celebration concluded with all of our patriots together singing in harmony our National Anthem, America the Beautiful and God Bless America.
